KOS ISLAND OVERVIEW

Kos the island of Hippocrates (father of medicine) with a population of more than 30,000 inhabitants and with a surface of 290 square kilometers - 45 km lenght by 11 km width - is the third largest of the Dodecanese islands after Rhodes and Karpathos. The capital and also the main port of the island is Kos town, located on the north east coast 22 km away from the airport. The coastline with a lenght of 112 km accommodates many lovely sandy beaches and quite a few traditional little villages. Kos island has an important history and many impressive archaeological sites.

 

HIPPOCRATES (c.460-377)

Hippocrates was born in Kos island and studied medicine in the Asklepeion. He became popular when he saved Athens from cholera epidemic. The Hippocratic oath is the basis for the ethics of the World Health Organization (WHO).
